Make Your Child’s Next Fishing Trip One To Remember

    By Webmaster | July 4, 2008

Almost all children like to go on fishing trips. Fishing trips are not only fun; it also gets them outside in the sunshine and in touch with nature.

Next time you take your children or grandchildren fishing, get them involved in the whole process. Don’t just load them into the car and head out to the fishing hole. Make the whole fishing trip an experience that they will remember.

    Start with the basics.

If you can, find someone who has a stand of canes and see if they will let you come and cut a few cane poles. Let your children pick out their own fishing pole. Then cut it down for them and show them how to get the leaves off. Next show them how to tie the fishing line to the fishing pole and attach the hook and bobber.

Next comes bait. Sure you could just stop by the bait shop and get a container of worms but let’s make this an adventure. You could probably find a few worms by simply turning over a few rocks in your yard. If you have a garden or access to a garden then a little digging with a hoe will probably yield all of the worms that you need for your fishing trip. Borrow a small bowl with a lid from the kitchen to keep them in. Don’t forget to add some dirt to keep your worms from drying out.

Now when you get to the lake or pond, show them how to bait their hooks. If the children are young, just let them watch you - hooks are sharp and you don’t want them to get hurt. Older children should be able to bait their hooks themselves. Just make sure that you’re there to help if they need it.

And don’t forget to take along a First Aid kit. Hopefully no one will get hurt but it’s good to be prepared.

Above all, have fun and make your child’s fishing trip one that they will remember for a long time. There’s nothing more exciting than catching a bream or perch on a cane pole.
