And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And da cotton is high
(from Gershwin’s immortal “Porgy and Bess”)
It’s the jumping fish that got me. Well, all fish for that matter. I just got It. I mean, I Got IT.
I got why men go fishing.
It’s the zen of it. The yoga feel. Ask any guy, and he will tell you I’m nuts. You see, “yoga” sounds so feminine. So New World-ish. No Real Guy would do anything less than Real Guy Stuff.
But fishing is truly a branch of yoga.
Muskie Fishing Tips - Jigging Fall Muskies
Friday, May 30th, 2008Most anglers think big when hunting lunker muskie, but if you want to catch more muskie think smaller baits and tackle. I caught my biggest muskellunge while fishing walleye with a plastic worm in September. More often than can be considered coincidental people catch a lunge while fishing other species. Most anglers look to heavy tackle, large baits and trolling as the way to catch muskies. Personally I become bored or just tired of trolling all the time.
Guided Fly Fishing Trips
Wednesday, May 28th, 2008Fly fishing is a specific type of fishing where a synthetic fly is used as bait. The “fly” is attached to the hook and swung over the surface of the water to attract fish. Moving the fly correctly in order to entice a fish to bite is one of the more difficult activities involved in fishing.
Selecting the Right Tackle
Wednesday, May 28th, 2008One of the most important things to consider when fly fishing is choosing your tackle the right way. Many people overlook this important factor and start with the wrong assumptions. They first buy the rod, then the line to match the rod, then the reel and then they buy the flies they will need to fish. The fact is the flies are the most important in determining weather or not you will be catching any fish.
The tackle selection process should go as follows:
Find Your Way Anywhere You Are
Sunday, May 25th, 2008I am a serious boater and angler and am amazed with the way technology on the water and even off it has grown over very recent years. The old way of fishing used to be using a map and going out on the water with your compass and trying to locate the places that you want to drop your lines in. The depth of the water and the location of the boat with regard to the reef under the ocean had to be determined by using your local knowledge of the water and boating knowledge in general. The old way made it very difficult for an amateur to get into the sport and get really good at locating the big trophy fish.
Want to Catch More and Bigger Fish? Then Do This
Wednesday, May 21st, 2008It’s all the rage in Kiwi-land. It catches fish - BIG fish like nothing else you’ve ever tried. It is so unique you’ll say, “I never would have thought of that”. What’s all the talk about? A technique that can get you more and BIGGER fish than ever before, that’s what. And here it is …
Flying a kite.

Live Shrimp Under A Popping Cork: You Can Never Go Wrong
Wednesday, May 21st, 2008One of the best tried and proven ways to fill a boat full of keeper trout and redfish is using a live shrimp under a popping cork. I prefer to use a treble hook, leaving about 18-24 inches of line between the hook and the popping cork, depending on the depth of water the fish are in. If I am fishing a shallow reef, then I shorten the length of line between the cork and the hook to prevent hang-ups, but if I am working birds, I want the shrimp to work a little deeper so I lengthen the line.
Time to Go Fishing
Monday, May 19th, 2008You can go out, buy the most expensive boat, the most expensive fish finder, and the latest top of the line tackle, but you are never going to be able to tell when the fish are biting. If someone could come out with an electronic device that does that, they would be overnight millionaires.
Unfortunately that hasn’t happened, yet. So for now, we have to rely on our own experiences. Some say that early morning is when the fish are active and some say that late afternoon/evening is the best time. While both early morning and late afternoon are great times to find active fish, it is possible to find fish biting throughout the day.
Fly-fishing, A Fun Sport
Saturday, May 17th, 2008Fly-fishing is an ancient angling method especially effective in catching trout and salmon. This distinct method of angling uses artificial flies to lure or excite fish. Fly-fishing helps anglers catch the fish easier than the traditional way.
There are two basic forms of fly-fishing, dry flies and wet flies.
Dry flies need coating with floatant in order for it to sit in the surface of the water. Dry flies are mostly effective in upstream and moving water. Dry flies help anglers’ spot where fish resides like pools and pocket in streams. Thus, it is easier to detect them and catch the fish.
Old Man And The Sea - A Modern Day Story
Saturday, May 17th, 2008The paddle from our launching site at Yokohama Bay to Kaena Point, where we usually turn around and start the return leg, is about two hours. On this day the waters were calm, the sun was hot, and the fish weren’t biting in the least. It was the kind of day that one gets lulled to the brink of sleep due to a complete lack of activity combined with the kayak’s gentle roll from side to side with each stroke of the paddle.
